[It's around midday, and Asami's 'Gear is propped up to record her sitting at a small table in the park. Her Riolu sits quietly beside her. The worn table is inlaid with a chess board, and the seat across from her is empty for now.]

Where I'm from, we have a game called Pai Sho.

[She speaks while she reaches into her bag to pull out a newly purchased chess set- mainly, the directions.]

It's a game of careful thinking and ruthless strategy. There doesn't seem to be a real equivalent here, but someone did point me toward this. Chess.

[Asami begins taking out the pieces and laying them out on the board.]

Anyone know anything about it?

[She'll be here for a while, reading over the rules and trying to teach Teruko how to play with her.]

[His fashion sense can not be controlled. Apparently, neither can the bird that thinks she's a hat.]

Hm...sure, I think I could give it a shot. Ain't really fidchell, but it doesn't look too difficult to learn.

[He took a seat across from Asami, extending his hand in a cheerful gesture.]

Name's--well, forget the name, nobody can pronounce it anyway. Everyone just calls me Lancer.

[Asami took his hand and shook it firmly. It was a businesswoman's shake.]

Asami Sato.

[Lancer was unusual, even for a nickname, but she went along with it.]

I hear it's easy to learn, but pretty tough to master. So two beginners should have it pretty balanced.

[She offered Lancer a smile.]

Hey, you look like a smart girl. I'd say between the two of us, we should be able to figure it out no problem.

[A bit of slyness crosses Asami's brow at his suggestion.]

All right, then.

[She unfolds the pamphlet of directions and lays it out at the center of the table.]

Do you know anything at all? Or should I start from the beginning?

Afraid not--I haven't played a game like this in a real long time.

If it is anything like fidchell, the point there's basically in trying to capture the king. This have the same kind of idea to it?

Yeah, you win by taking down the King.

[She holds up the white King piece and places it on the board at its appropriate place.]

He's not actually a powerful piece, though. You use all of the others to protect him.

Heh--just like real life, sounds fitting. So why are the others all shaped differently?

[He pointed at the knight, rook, and bishop specifically, tilting his head just enough to make the Swablu ruffle her feathers.]

So you can tell the difference between them. The craftsmanship is impressive...

[She leans down to take a closer look at one of the knights. Asami has always had an appreciation for good craft, and the gamepieces she's used to seeing are all the same shape.]

The little horses are the knights. Then to their outside are the rooks, and the bishops sit beside the king and queen, who are in the center of the back row.

[She begins arranging the pieces as she's described.]
