5th Gear - Video
Jun. 12th, 2015 11:46 am[Asami has waited a few days to post this, gotten through the initial emotional shock of it. Yes, Korra is fine, and she knows that. But she's not here, anymore. And if what she's heard about going home is true, she won't remember anything about being here.
When the video turns on, she looks a little weathered. Definitely tired, as she rests against the side of a giant Arcanine. She didn't cry this morning, that's a start.]
Korra's gone home.
[Asami pauses. She hasn't really thought out the post any further than that. Taking about this is more difficult than just stewing and processing.]
Just... thought her friends would like to know. If you ended up with any of her Pokémon, could you tell me? I'd just like to know, that's all.

Apr. 6th, 2015 03:21 pm[Here's someone who hasn't been on the network so much lately. When Asami appears on the camera, anyone who hasn't seen her recently will notice that she looks a bit older.]
I finished it!
[Stepping away from the camera, she reveals a hotel courtyard with various tools and scraps scattered about. A metal contraption that appears to be some kind of battery sits a safe distance away at the center of the shot.]
At home, we employ lightningbenders to make our electricity. They shoot energy straight into batteries, and it can be stored efficiently without having to burn coal. I'm hoping I can get something to work similarly with Pokémon's electric attacks.
[She glances off camera.]
When you're ready, Supāku.
[A Flaafy shuffles onto the camera, winds up, and releases an electric attack at the metal conductors of Asami's invention. After several moments, an indicator meter on the device's facade turns to maximum, and the Flaafy stops.]
I think it worked!
[Asami trots over to the device with another 'Gear in hand (sorry Korra, she had to steal yours for science purposes) and plugs it in.]
It's charging!
[She turns back to the camera.]
I'm hoping I can continue working with this idea and eventually come up with something small enough for trainers to keep on their person while they're traveling. The technology here is evolved so much farther than at home, I think it might be possible.

Dec. 21st, 2014 12:41 pmChristmas is in a few days, and the atmosphere in the city as people get ready is... amazing. We don't have a holiday quite like this in the United Republic.
[Asami is bundled up at a café in Goldenrod with a mug of tea.]
Of course, that also means that I don't really know much about all of this. They have a festival for the Winter Solstice in the Southern Water Tribe, and that would normally be happening this weekend. Are there people who observe that, here?

[It's around midday, and Asami's 'Gear is propped up to record her sitting at a small table in the park. Her Riolu sits quietly beside her. The worn table is inlaid with a chess board, and the seat across from her is empty for now.]
Where I'm from, we have a game called Pai Sho.
[She speaks while she reaches into her bag to pull out a newly purchased chess set- mainly, the directions.]
It's a game of careful thinking and ruthless strategy. There doesn't seem to be a real equivalent here, but someone did point me toward this. Chess.
[Asami begins taking out the pieces and laying them out on the board.]
Anyone know anything about it?
[She'll be here for a while, reading over the rules and trying to teach Teruko how to play with her.]

That rain yesterday sure was... a nice welcome.
[Judging by the young woman's tone of voice, it was most certainly not a nice welcome. Yep, definitely another noobie. And one who's not so used to spending the night outside. A Riolu could be seen in the background, splashing in the quickly drying puddles lining the dirt road of Route 29.]
I think I've got things under control, though. Food, clothes, my own... [A glance over her shoulder] "Pokémon." I guess you guys have probably already heard how crazy this all is, by now. Does "Harmonic Convergence" mean anything to any of you? My world just went through some pretty huge changes, and I'm wondering if that caused... whatever's got me here, now.
[She seems startled, suddenly, as she remembers her manners-]
I'm Asami, by the way.
[One more question.]
...Does the music ever stop?
[Action to Route 29]
[Shortly after her broadcast, Asami can be found halfheartedly avoiding puddles and mud as she makes her way through the tall grass. It isn't that she really minds getting messy. She is travelling, after all. She'd just rather not.]

Canon: Legend of Korra
Canon Point: 409, after her meeting with Raiko (President of her country) and Varrick (rival engineer) about building a weapon to counter Kuvira's spirit energy cannon
AU/CRAU: No
Age: 22
History: Her wiki page
Personality: Asami presents herself as a refined and friendly woman. She is naturally socially adept, and this has only been supplemented by her childhood just on the edge of the public eye. Few people mistake her for "daddy's helpless little girl" anymore, now that she's successfully run her family's company for three years and rebuilt a city. Her sweet, feminine personality comes naturally to her, but it isn't a weakness. She isn't one to hold a grudge, and thinks approaches conflict usually in a logical manner. She is intelligent and focused, and though she is forgiving, she is not a pushover. She doesn't get distracted with petty matters when there are more important things to be done. Asami is certain in her views and beliefs, and she will absolutely not let anyone make her choices for her.
Asami grew up young. She lost her mother to a firebending triad when she was six years old, and this caused her to grow up very close to her father, who raised her to be the successor of Future Industries, the industrial company he built himself. Asami's and her father Hiroshi's very different reactions to the murder of her mother highlight Asami's level-headed, logical, and forgiving nature. While her father developed an all-consuming hatred for bending in general, Asami didn't let the loss color her opinion of benders. This is obvious in her expressing to Mako, a firebender, that he makes her feel safe; she doesn't even mention how her mother died when they talk about their respective lost parents. The love and loss she feels for her mother outweighs her anger. This is a carrying trend in how Asami experiences loss, evidenced in the eventual loss of her father, and the shaky, gradual loss of her relationship with Mako. During the final conflict with the Equalists (the violent anti-bending establishment her father joined), her father went so far as to try to kill her. He has since been in prison, and Asami never makes a mention of hating him, or even being angry at all. His betrayal and loss affect her deeply, though, and she can't bring herself to even go to the Republic City prison for any other reason because it reminds her of him. Only in the past few weeks has Asami been able to finally visit her father, who had been writing her letters for years. She hadn't opened any of them and attempted to confront with anger the man who tore her life apart three years ago. After leaving, the meeting plagues at her thoughts, and she decides to go back with a different approach. She decides that she's going to try to forgive him, even though she doesn't know if she'll ever be able to. This follows the trend of Asami's forgiving nature as well as her habit for falling back on relationships that aren't necessarily healthy for her in times of great stress.
In spite of her losses, Asami is not a jealous person. She just expects the best of people, and wants the same honesty from others that she gives them. Being straightforward is very important to her, seen in the way her past relationship with Mako started to crumble. She wasn't jealous of his feelings for Korra; she was angry that Mako had been going behind her back and lying to her face about what had passed between them. Again, thinking with a similar logic as she always does, she only directs her negative emotions toward Mako, stressing that she likes Korra. The relationship drama never comes between the girls.
Although Asami is typically straightforward and tactful in her speech patterns and interactions, she can become sarcastic and sassy when irritated by petty matters. In more serious matters, she's not afraid to let her anger loose. If she's angry with you, you're going to know it. Asami is a naturally gentle soul, though she will not hesitate to stand up for herself in the heat of the moment, especially if you're a person who has mistreated her in the past. She is fearless in the face of authority, though not openly defiant or caustic unless she feels it's been personally earned. During the Equalist revolution when non-benders all come to be mistreated and put under curfew (think the Red Scare), Asami, blatantly breaking curfew as a non-bender and assisting the Avatar in acts that directly defy the police, marches right up to the man responsible for the injustice to give him a piece of her mind. She also at on point places Republic City's most important entrepreneur in a wrist lock while in a private meeting with the President, so it's safe to say that she has attained a certain level of confidence in her ability to handle herself regardless of the audience. It is a sternness she has had to develop over the past few years, being a powerful young woman in a male-dominated field. She goes out of her way to run an ad campaign encouraging women to pursue careers in engineering; that gives insight to how she thinks as a businesswoman.
With a rich businessman for a father, Asami has been brought up in a life of privilege in Republic City. Mansion, servants, etiquette lessons, the works. This lifestyle has fostered a materialist streak in Asami. Though she isn't greedy, she's used to having a lot of stuff. Her tastes are definitely on the girly side, and she's never seen out of the house without makeup and carefully done hair. In spite of her life of privilege, she isn't ignorant of those not as fortunate as she. She is independent and hard-working in matters both small and large, whether it's being the only one to help with the dishes or taking over the head position of an enormous public company with very little notice as a nineteen year old woman. There is nothing skittish about Asami. She jumps head-first into everything she does and is passionate in her persuits.
Those close to her see a looser version of Asami. Her independence and wilder side come further forward, and she can be quite a rebel, especially when Korra is thrown into the mix. She is very expressive and affectionate with her friends, and she has fun innocently teasing them. Rather than being bitter for it, she and Korra bond over the disastrous love triangle involving the two of them and Mako. Asami is the kind of person who, unless she has a reason not to, will try to get along with most people. Physical affection is very meaningful to her. Asami is an eager hugger with her close friends, and is quickly irritated if someone tries use it to sway her opinion, like when Mako takes her hand when trying to convince her to put off talking about their relationship problems. She is extremely loyal to those she cares about as well as to her own moral code. She is an avid sports fan, never missing Probending (think magic elemental boxing) night at the Republic City Arena. Further reinforcing her ability to take care of herself, she is very physically fit and an extremely capable martial artist. From a young age, Asami has been working on cars, boats, and motorcycles which gave her an early appreciation of mechanics and engineering. Though her father invented the biplane, Asami becomes the one to perfect it for commercial use. She is among Republic City's scientific elite and also works as a test pilot. She's been racing ("testing") cars at the Future Industries track since she was old enough to drive. She's very adept at working with her hands, and is a naturally talented and well experienced driver of pretty much anything. She describes driving as "relaxing," and it is a very central part of her life.
Asami easily becomes attached to people who are supportive of her and believe in her, especially at this point in her life. The only family she has left is in prison, and the past three years have been filled with lonely, tireless nights in the office, drafting and building and designing as she works at the forefront of rebuilding Republic City after a disastrous battle destroyed much of it. Future Industries is, she says, all that she has left of her family, and she has essentially become married to her job. When the company was nearly sunk soon after her father's imprisonment (she may be clever, but she wasn't ready to be the head of a company), she even turned to Republic City's organized crime leaders to help her track down whoever had been stealing her cargo when the Republic City Police were of no help. Her passion lies in innovating and creating, but this lifestyle can also get very draining for Asami, and she never minds an excuse to take a break. She has a very good relationship with her employees, and is a well-liked boss in a time when underdeveloped labor laws can make working on factory floors dangerous. Asami is strong in her morals, and this includes how she runs her business. In her years of working, she has developed a keen eye for the corruption that plagues big business and does what she can to steer clear from it.
Debt: Right now in Asami's home world, the Earth Kingdom is being taken over by a military dictator who is putting people not of direct Earth descent in prison camps. Although it is not explicitly stated what exactly happens to people in the camps, conditions are generally understood to be awful. Asami's family moved to Republic City from the Fire colonies in the Earth Kingdom, making it possible that she still has relatives she doesn't know about living in that area. The Witch convinces her that she has extended family in the camps and that Asami can work to set them free.
Previous Game Info: n/a
Inventory: Her canon outfit, and a sturdy, right handed glove with a taser built in, strong enough to knock an adult unconscious.
Abilities: Asami has been training in self defense since she was six, and she regularly exercises to keep herself in shape. She uses her tall, slender build to her advantage in fights, turning her opponent's energy against them and avoiding heavy blows.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
+Excellent fine motor skills
+Genius intellect in the physical sciences
+Naturally altruistic
+A problem solver
+Level-headed in a crisis
-Daddy Issues™: Asami has lacked a true parental figure for the past four years. This lack of any real family in her life shows, upon closer inspection, and she can become lonely or too attached to people who are affectionate toward her.
-Awkward with children. She's not a huge fan.
-Too quick to forgive: In the same vein as her family issues, Asami will sometimes fall back on people who have hurt her in the past just for something to hold onto
-Materialistic, though it's mellowed out in the past few years.
-Likely to turn inward or throw herself into her work when troubled. She's extremely productive during times like these, but can also burn out on the distraction. It's just a bandaid she uses because she doesn't have many (if any) close people to talk to.

Current Characters in Route: Scar
Character
Name: Asami Sato
Series: The Legend of Korra
Timeline: After the last episode of Book 2
Canon Resource Links: Asami's Avatar Wiki entry
Personality:
Asami presents herself as a refined and friendly young woman. She is naturally extroverted and socially adept, and this has only been supplemented by her childhood just on the edge of the public eye. She's very good at putting on the persona of a "good, innocent rich girl." In a lot of ways, this comes naturally to her. Asami mentions herself that people frequently assume that she's just "Daddy's helpless little girl," but in reality, she can handle herself in most situations. Her sweet, feminine personality comes naturally to her, but it isn't a weakness. She isn't one to hold a grudge, and thinks about situations with a level head. She is intelligent and focused, and though she is forgiving, she is not a pushover. She doesn't get distracted with petty matters when there are more important things to be done. Asami is certain in her views and beliefs, and she will absolutely not let anyone make her choices for her.
Asami grew up young. She lost her mother to a firebending triad when she was six years old, and this caused her to grow up very close to her father, who raised her to be the successor of Future Industries, the company he built himself. Asami's and her father Hiroshi's very different reactions to the murder of her mother highlight Asami's level-headed nature. While her father developed an all-consuming hatred for bending in general, Asami didn't let the loss color her opinion of benders. This is obvious in her expressing to Mako that he makes her feel safe; she doesn't even mention how her mother died when they talk about it. The love and loss she feels for her mother outweighs her anger. This is a carrying trend in how Asami experiences loss, evidenced in the eventual loss of her father, and the shaky, gradual loss of her relationship with Mako. During the final conflict with the Equalists, her father went so far as to try to kill her. He has since been put in prison, and Asami never makes a mention of hating him, or even being angry at all. His betrayal and loss affect her deeply, though, and she can't bring herself to even go to the Republic City prison for any other reason because it reminds her of him. When Mako, her boyfriend at the time, was showing obvious interest in Korra, she confronted him about it, only growing annoyed when he denied that there was any problem. Asami even made it a point to say that she wasn't angry at Korra. She is not a jealous person; everything just happened to go wrong at the worst possible time. Mako began drifting away at the same time Asami lost her father, the only family she had left and someone whom she was very close to. She just expects the best of people, and wants the same honesty from others that she gives them. When she's annoyed, one can definitely see sass and sarcasm come into her demeanor. If she's angry with you, you're going to know it. Asami is a naturally gentle soul, though she will not hesitate to stand up for herself in the moment.
With a rich businessman for a father, she has been brought up in a life of privilege in Republic City. Mansion, servants, etiquette lessons, the works. This lifestyle has fostered a materialist streak in Asami. Though she isn't greedy, or even spoiled, she's used to having a lot of stuff. Her tastes are definitely on the girly side, and she's never seen out of the house without makeup and carefully done hair. In spite of her life of privilege, she isn't ignorant of those not as fortunate as she. Asami doesn't treat anybody differently, be it better or worse, based on their social standing. She is independent and hard-working in matters both small and large, whether it's being the only one to help Pema with the dishes or taking over the head position of an enormous public company with very little notice as a nineteen year old woman. There is nothing skittish about Asami. She is always openly enthuseastic, and jumps head-first into everything she does.
Those closer to her see a looser version of Asami. Her independence and wilder side come further forward. She is very expressive and affectionate with her friends, and she can definitely have fun teasing them. She and Korra end up bonding of the disaster that was their respective romances with Mako. Asami is the kind of person who, unless she has a reason not to, will try to get along with pretty much anyone. She is extremely loyal to those she cares about. She is an avid sports fan, never missing Probending night at the Republic City Arena. Further reinforcing her ability to take care of herself, she is very physically fit and an extremely capable martial artist. Even at her young age, Asami has already spent a good deal of time working on cars, boats, and airplanes. She knows how they work, and even works as a designer and engineer for Future Industries. Though her father invented the biplane, Asami becomes the one to perfect it for commercial use. She also works as a test pilot. She's been racing ("testing") cars at the Future Industries track since she was old enough to drive. She's very adept at working with her hands, and is a naturally talented and well experienced operator of pretty much anything with a motor. She describes driving as "relaxing," and it is a very central part of her life.
Asami easily becomes attached to people who are supportive of her and believe in her, especially at this point in her life. She has no family left, and the last six months have been filled with long hours spent alone in her office, desperately trying to save the company that her father dragged into the ground. Future Industries is, she says, all that she has left of her family, and she has essentially become married to her job. She's in desperate need of a break, and it's high time that something good actually happens for a change. When she does see the opportunity for something good, she clings to it, even if it's not the most rational decision. This is when she can become a bit naive. Asami makes it, unfortunately, easy to be taken advantage of. She is naturally trusting and optimistic, and this comes back to bite her when she turns to Verrick to help save her company. She places too much trust in him, and he ends up stealing a large shipment of mechatanks. After Mako promises her that he's not going to give up on her, she gets back together with him, only for him to make like it never happened and jump right back to Korra as soon as she got back. Asami's naiveness can be her greatest downfall. At weaker moments like this, she can lose sight of the bigger picture. Sure, saving her company was easier by selling mechatanks to the Southern Water Tribe, but she was also helping to fund an unnecessary war. Although Asami is usually a very level-headed thinker, she can be short-sighted in her choices.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+Highly physically fit, and a capable hand to hand fighter
+Diplomatic and polite
+Socially adept
+Book smart
+Excellent driver and pilot
+Strong hand/eye coordination and reflexes, given her skill in fighting and piloting
+Creative and open minded
-Can be manipulable
-Naturally naive
-Not used to being on her own outside the city
-Inexperienced at cookingit's totally a weakness
-Can't deal with being around prisons
-Has developed a fear of betrayal and loss

Starter: I would like to pick Riolu for Asami, because its evolved form of Lucario is a very good type match for her. Fighting, for her hand to hand combat skills, and Steel for her interest in mechanics and engineering. Lucario also has the association with becoming stronger the more damaged it becomes, and this links well with the beginning of Asami's own character arc. She shows the greatest emotional and physical strength at her lowest moment, when her father reveals himself as an Equalist, and this marks the beginning of her development as a deeper character.

[The PokéConnect is easy enough to figure out. When the video feed pops on, there's a confident-looking young woman behind the camera, and she's clearly impressed with the device.]
Hi! I'm Asami. I... just got here. Wherever here is. [Spirit shenanigans? She's still thinking that. She glances sceptically over her shoulder at the wooded area behind her.]
I think I'm pretty much filled in on what I'm supposed to do. But does anyone have any advice? And can anyone tell me about how they make these "PokéConnects?" We don't have anything like them in Republic City.
[And she's totally geeking out over here.]
Third Person Sample:
Asami shot an unamused glare at the sky as it doused the route with rain. Where were they, again? It was all starting to look the same, under the stormy grey clouds. Her Riolu clearly didn't mind, but she supposed this kind of thing was just going to take some getting used to. It wasn't like the South Pole, where you just had to worry about snow in your hair. Her bag was drenched. Mud had soaked into her shoes. Her hair was matted to her face. Remnants of eye makeup ran down her cheeks in technicolor. (That part was funny, she had to admit.) She hadn't been ready for rain. Even the thick canopy of leaves did little to stop the downpour. Riolu delightedly splashed around her ankles, further soaking her to the bone, but it hardly even mattered anymore.
"I guess you don't know how far the next town is, huh?" Asami looked down at Riolu, weary and exasperated, but not particularly annoyed. The little Pokémon simply shook her head. No. Asami sighed.
"Miss?" She looked up at the sound of another voice to find a slightly older woman up just ahead. And she had an umbrella...
"Hm?"
"You look like a young lady who could use one of these."
"Oh, I couldn't take your-!"
"Please. I have an extra." The woman produced another small collapsible umbrella from her bag and offered it to Asami, who immediately reached for the item with a slight note of desperation... Only to have the woman pull it away at the last moment. "That'll be 2000."
"2- What? It's an umbrella."
"You want it, don't you?"
Asami's lower lip stuck out in a frustrated pout. Yes, she wanted it, but just on the principles of good business, she couldn't possibly...
But the rain. The rain.
"Fine." She thrust out the money and snatched the umbrella before the woman could get any more brilliant ideas. Some people!
